Vanguard Index Funds
A family of index mutual funds and exchange-traded funds that track broad market benchmarks, letting everyday investors own slices of the stock market at low cost. Founded in 1975 by John C. Bogle, the company launched the first index mutual fund for individual investors in 1976 — the Vanguard 500 Index Fund, which skeptics nicknamed "Bogle's Folly." Bogle named the firm after HMS Vanguard, the British warship that served as Admiral Nelson's flagship at the Battle of the Nile in 1798.
