A maker of business communication systems, Avaya builds the phone, video, and messaging networks companies use to run their offices and customer-service call centers, with platforms such as Aura, IP Office, and its contact-center software. The company was born in 2000 when Lucent Technologies spun off its enterprise communications group, whose roots reach back to AT&T's business-phone division. Its name was chosen to suggest "open and flexible communication" — deliberately steering away from the acronym-heavy telecom names common at the time.
