A maker of custom automated manufacturing systems, ATS designs and builds the machines that assemble everything from electric-vehicle batteries and medical devices to consumer products for factories around the world. Founded in Cambridge, Ontario in 1978 by German-born engineer Klaus Woerner, the company started as Automation Tooling Systems—a name that literally described its beginnings in automated tooling and assembly lines. Woerner, who reportedly came to Canada with little money, grew it from a single machine shop into one of the world's largest automation builders.
