A maker of virtualization software that lets many operating systems run at once on a single physical server, VMware is best known for its vSphere platform used by data centers worldwide. It was founded in 1998 in Palo Alto by Stanford researchers, including professor Mendel Rosenblum and his wife Diane Greene, who were the first to successfully commercialize virtualization of the x86 computer architecture. The name blends "VM" (virtual machine) with "ware" from "software."
