An online fashion retailer and marketplace based in Berlin, Zalando sells clothing, shoes, accessories, and beauty products across Europe, letting shoppers browse big brands and independent sellers on one site. It began in 2008, when founders Robert Gentz and David Schneider launched a web shop for shoes under the name Ifansho. The now-famous name was picked to sound Italian and be easy to pronounce in any language — and may nod to zapatos, the Spanish word for shoes.
