A French multi-energy company that produces and sells oil, natural gas, and electricity, plus solar and wind power, along with lubricants and batteries through its Saft brand. It was founded in 1924 as the Compagnie française des pétroles to secure France's oil supply, and grew through mergers with Petrofina and Elf Aquitaine. Its "Total" name, chosen in 1954 for being simple and easy to say worldwide, later became TotalEnergies in 2021 as the firm broadened beyond petroleum.
