A maker of drinks people raise at celebrations, Diageo owns a sprawling family of spirits and beers sold in scores of countries, from Johnnie Walker whisky and Smirnoff vodka to Baileys, Captain Morgan and the Irish stout Guinness. It was born in 1997 when Guinness PLC and Grand Metropolitan merged, and the made-up name "Diageo" was coined by a branding firm from the Latin for "day" and the Greek for "earth" — meant to celebrate life "every day, everywhere."
