A shell company formed in 2021 to buy or merge with a private technology business, Macondray Capital Acquisition Corp. I was a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC — an investment vehicle that raises money from public investors purely to take another company public. It hunted in software, data, media, and telecom, but never closed a deal and wound itself down in late 2022. Its unusual name echoes the rare surname that also graces San Francisco's historic, vine-covered Macondray Lane.
