Mcdermott International Ltd
A global engineering and construction company based in Houston, McDermott designs and builds offshore oil-and-gas infrastructure—platforms, subsea systems, pipelines—plus onshore refineries and LNG plants, installing much of it with its own fleet of marine construction vessels. It began in 1923 when 24-year-old Ralph McDermott won a contract to build 50 wooden drilling rigs in Texas and named the firm J. Ray McDermott & Company in honor of his father, who came aboard to help. A fun detail: in 1947 McDermott installed the first offshore platform out of sight of land, helping launch the modern deep-water oil industry.
