Bayer AG
A German life-science company making medicines, consumer health products, and crop protection. Its best-known product is Aspirin, the painkiller developed by its chemist in 1897, and its consumer brands also include Claritin and Aleve. Founded in 1863 in Barmen as a dye works by Friedrich Bayer and Johann Friedrich Weskott, the firm still carries its founder's name today and also sells seeds and crop-protection products to farmers through its Crop Science division. Aspirin's name is said to blend "acetyl" with Spiraea, the plant from which salicylic acid was first isolated.
