The Swatch Group AG
A maker of finished watches and the movements inside them, this Swiss giant owns brands spanning the whole price range — from the colorful plastic Swatch to luxury names like Omega, Longines, Tissot, and Breguet. It was born in the 1980s when consultant Nicolas Hayek saved two struggling watch groups by merging them and betting on a cheap, cheerful "second watch," whose name "Swatch" itself comes from that idea. The playful Swatch launched in 1983 with just 51 components, far fewer than a typical watch, helping revive Swiss watchmaking.
