Abiomed Inc
A maker of tiny heart pumps and other circulatory-support devices, Abiomed is best known for its Impella line—pumps threaded into the heart to keep blood flowing during high-risk procedures or heart failure. Founded in 1981 by Dr. David Lederman as Applied Biomedical Corporation, the company later shortened that name to "Abiomed" and bought the German Impella technology in 2005. It made history in 2001 with the AbioCor, the first fully implantable artificial heart, and today operates as part of Johnson & Johnson.
