A South Korean conglomerate that builds some of the world's most famous skyscrapers — its construction arm raised the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the Petronas Towers in Malaysia — while also trading steel, chemicals, and energy, and running fashion brands like Beanpole and 8Seconds. The company traces its roots to a small trading store called Samsung Sanghoe opened in 1938, and its name means "Three Stars" in Korean. During the Petronas Towers build, its workers wore blue hardhats while a rival Japanese team wore red, turning the race to the top into a friendly competition.
