A German maker of skin care and adhesives, Beiersdorf produces the global brands Nivea, Eucerin, and the Tesa line of sticky tapes and films. It began in 1882 as a Hamburg pharmacy founded by Paul C. Beiersdorf, who patented a method for making coated medical plasters. A pharmacist named Oscar Troplowitz bought the lab in 1890 and, in 1911, with two scientists, created the first stable skin cream—snow-white in color—so he named it Nivea, from the Latin word for "snowy."
