A Finnish maker of heavy material-handling machines, Kalmar builds the reachstackers, straddle carriers, terminal tractors, and forklifts that move shipping containers around ports, terminals, and warehouses around the world. Its roots stretch back to 1949, when a small Swedish workshop built the first forklift for a sawmill, and it grew through mergers before becoming an independent company in 2024 when it split off from Cargotec. The name comes from the Swedish city of Kalmar, while the straddle carrier—a machine that literally drives over a container to lift it—was first built in Finland in 1976 and remains a port workhorse.
