A maker of Indonesia's famous hand-rolled clove cigarettes, Sampoerna is one of the world's largest tobacco companies and traces its roots to a Chinese immigrant, Liem Seeng Tee, who began rolling kretek smokes at home in Surabaya in 1913. Its legendary brand Dji Sam Soe gets its name from the Hokkien words for "2-3-4," numbers that add up to the lucky 9. The name Sampoerna itself comes from the Indonesian word for "perfection."
