A maker of language-learning software, Rosetta Stone teaches dozens of languages through an immersive, picture-and-sound method rather than translation drills, with apps and online courses used by students, travelers, and businesses. It was founded in 1992 in Virginia by Allen Stoltzfus, who was inspired by learning German through natural immersion in Germany. The company took its name from the ancient Egyptian Rosetta Stone, the artifact that helped scholars unlock hieroglyphs — fitting for a tool meant to "unlock" new languages.
