A maker of laser-based manufacturing and testing systems for the microelectronics industry, Electro Scientific Industries builds the precision tools that etch and trim the tiny features on semiconductors and circuit boards. Founded in Portland, Oregon in 1944 as Brown Engineering, it began by building impedance-measuring "bridges" before pivoting to lasers in 1969. It holds the title of Oregon's oldest high-tech company and helped give the Portland area its "Silicon Forest" nickname.
