A maker of precision machine tools and workholding gear, Hardinge builds lathes, grinders, and the collets and chucks that hold metal parts steady while machines shape them — trusted by machinists, job shops, and manufacturers of everything from medical devices to watch parts. Brothers Franklin and Henry Hardinge founded the company in 1890 in a Chicago boarding house, where they first built watchmaking tools and a small foot-powered lathe. A fun footnote: the founders' very first products were for watchmakers, and the firm's "Cataract" lathe line was snapped up in 1902, keeping Hardinge at the heart of precision work for over a century.
