Sumco Corp.
A Japanese maker of silicon wafers—the round, ultrapure slices of silicon that computer chips are built on—supplying the semiconductor firms whose products power smartphones, computers, and cars. It was born in 1999 as a joint venture between Sumitomo Metal Industries and Mitsubishi Materials, and its name is a mash-up of those two parents, Sumitomo and Mitsubishi CO. Today it ranks as one of the world's two biggest wafer makers, trading the top tier with fellow Japanese rival Shin-Etsu.
