Marks & Spencer Group Plc
A major British retailer selling clothing, home goods, and its famous own-brand food, Marks & Spencer is a familiar name on high streets across Britain. It began in 1884 as Michael Marks's "Penny Bazaar" market stall in Leeds, where a fixed one-penny price meant customers never had to ask (handy for a founder learning English), and took the Spencer half of its name when cashier Tom Spencer joined him in 1894. Its long-running St Michael label was named after founder Michael Marks.
