Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
A maker of tiny electronic components from fine ceramics, Murata Manufacturing is the world's largest producer of multilayer ceramic capacitors — the small parts packed by the hundreds into smartphones, cars, and other devices. Founded in 1944 by Akira Murata in Kyoto, Japan, it grew out of his family's ceramic-insulator business and took its name from his surname. Though Murata had no formal training in electricity, he started in a small workshop with a hand-built gas kiln.
