Intesa Sanpaolo S.p.a.
Italy's largest banking group, Intesa Sanpaolo is a universal bank serving everyday customers, small businesses, large corporations, and public institutions with current accounts, loans, wealth management, and insurance. It was formed on January 1, 2007, when Banca Intesa merged with Sanpaolo IMI, two groups whose roots reach back centuries. Its name combines "Intesa," Italian for "agreement," with a nod to the Compagnia di San Paolo, a charitable brotherhood founded in Turin in 1563—and it even runs the Gallerie d'Italia art museums in former bank buildings.
