A German financial-market infrastructure operator based in Frankfurt, Deutsche Börse runs the trading platforms behind the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (Xetra), the derivatives exchange Eurex, and the DAX index, plus settlement and custody services through its Clearstream arm. The modern company was formed on New Year's Day 1993, when three independent German bodies—the Frankfurt exchange, a derivatives bourse, and a securities depository—merged under one roof. Fun fact: the word "Börse" (German for "exchange") traces back to the medieval Van der Beurse family of Bruges, whose coat of arms showed three purses.
