Munich Reinsurance AG
A reinsurer based in Munich that acts as the insurer of other insurance companies, helping them cover huge risks like natural disasters and major commercial projects, while its ERGO arm sells everyday policies for homes, cars and health. It was founded in 1880 by Carl von Thieme as one of the world's first independent reinsurers, starting with just four employees in two rooms without even a telephone. Its nickname "Münchener Rück" is just a shortened way of saying Munich Reinsurance, though the English-speaking world now calls it Munich Re.
