Jeronimo Martins, Sgps, S.a.
A Portuguese food-retail group that runs some of Europe's best-known grocery chains: Biedronka, Poland's big discount supermarket (Biedronka is the Polish word for "ladybug," and the logo is a smiling cartoon ladybug), plus Pingo Doce supermarkets in Portugal, the Recheio cash-and-carry chain, and Ara convenience stores in Colombia. The business traces back to 1792, when a young man from Galicia named Jerónimo Martins opened a small grocery shop in Lisbon's Chiado district selling sausages, grain, candles, and wine — the shop bore his name, and that name still fronts the group today.
