A Finnish maker of tires for cars, SUVs, vans and heavy machinery, best known for its Hakkapeliitta winter tires—the brand that invented the world's first winter tire back in 1934. The company began in 1898 as a rubber works in Helsinki making galoshes, later moving to the town of Nokia, and it was spun off from the Nokia corporation in the late 1980s. Fun fact: "Hakkapeliitta" comes from the battle cry of elite Finnish cavalrymen who charged in the Thirty Years' War, a fitting name for tires built to conquer icy roads.
