A maker of commercial airliners, helicopters, and defense and space systems, Airbus builds the A220 and A320 families of passenger jets flown by airlines around the world. It began in 1970 as a European consortium of French, German, British, and Spanish partners, created to challenge American aircraft makers. The name comes from the 1960s aviation term "air bus" — a big plane meant to carry crowds of passengers like a city bus.
