iShares Trust
A family of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) run by BlackRock, one of the world's largest investment managers. iShares Trust bundles the underlying holdings of these funds so everyday investors can buy a slice of a whole market — like the S&P 500 or a bond index — in a single trade. The brand was born in 2000 at Barclays Global Investors, which had earlier launched its first international index funds under the name WEBS; the "i" in iShares stands for "index." BlackRock bought the business in 2009 and has grown iShares into one of the best-known names in fund investing.
