KEPCO is the state-controlled electric utility that keeps South Korea's lights on, generating and delivering power to homes and businesses across the country. Its roots reach back to 1898, when King Gojong and American partners Henry Collbran and Harry Bostwick launched the Seoul Electric Company, the first utility in the kingdom. When electric lamps first glowed at Gyeongbokgung Palace, locals called them "mulbul" — "water light" — convinced the glow came from the pond that cooled the generator.
