A diversified mining and natural-resources company based in Mumbai, Vedanta digs up and processes zinc, lead, silver, copper, aluminium, iron ore, and oil and gas, selling metals used in everything from construction to electronics. It grew out of Sterlite Industries, founded by Anil Agarwal, who started as a scrap-metal dealer in Mumbai in the 1970s. The name honors his mother, Vedvati Agarwal, and echoes the Sanskrit word for the culmination of the Vedas.
