A major American broadcaster, CBS began in 1927 as United Independent Broadcasters, a Chicago radio network started by talent agent Arthur Judson after NBC turned down his clients. When the Columbia Phonograph Company backed the struggling network, it was renamed the Columbia Phonograph Broadcasting System, later shortened to the Columbia Broadcasting System. Under William Paley's leadership it became one of the world's largest television networks, nicknamed the "Tiffany Network" for its prestige programming.
