A distributor of natural gas to homes and businesses across the Carolinas and Tennessee, Piedmont Natural Gas keeps furnaces burning and stoves cooking for more than a million customers, and now operates as part of Duke Energy. Founded in 1950 by three Carolinians who bought the rights to distribute manufactured gas in several North Carolina cities, the young company set up its first headquarters in a former Studebaker car dealership. The name "Piedmont" comes from the region it serves, the rolling plateau east of the Appalachian Mountains.
