A fast-food chain serving New Orleans-style fried chicken, its spicy signature sandwich, flaky buttermilk biscuits, Cajun fries, and red beans and rice at locations worldwide. It began in 1972, when New Orleans cook Al Copeland opened a chicken stand he first named "Chicken on the Run," then renamed it Popeyes after Popeye Doyle, the detective in The French Connection — not the sailor. The company later licensed the cartoon sailor's image for decades of its marketing.
