Nordion Inc.
An Ottawa health science company that supplies Cobalt-60 and gamma-irradiation used to sterilize medical devices, make food safer, and help treat cancer. It began in 1946 as the radium-sales division of a Canadian government mining firm, became part of Atomic Energy of Canada, and was spun out as Nordion in 1988. Its early cobalt-60 teletherapy machines, nicknamed the "Cobalt Bomb," helped treat the first patient in 1951.
