Kodiak Oil & Gas Corp
An independent energy company that explored for, acquired, and produced crude oil and natural gas in the Rocky Mountain region, chiefly the Williston Basin of North Dakota and Montana and the Green River Basin of Wyoming and Colorado. Founded in 2001, it took its name from Alaska's Kodiak bear, a nod to northern strength and ruggedness, and was absorbed by Whiting Petroleum Corporation in 2014.
