Penn Virginia Corporation

An energy company born as a coal powerhouse in southwest Virginia's Appalachia, founded in 1882 by Philadelphia businessman John Leisenring, Jr., as the Virginia Coal & Iron Co. Its name "Penn Virginia" bridges its Pennsylvania-based founders and its Virginia operations. It built company towns like Stonega to house miners, later shifted from mining to leasing its vast coal lands for royalties, and eventually pivoted to oil and gas before rebranding as Ranger Oil in 2021.
