First Financial Holdings Inc

A bank holding company headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina, this firm was the parent of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Charleston, historically the oldest and largest bank based in that coastal city. It opened its doors in July 1934, in the depths of the Great Depression, as a federally chartered savings and loan. In 2013 it was merged into SCBT Financial Corporation, which later became SouthState Bank, folding the city's longtime hometown lender into one of the region's biggest banks.
