Vanguard Health Systems, Inc.
A Nashville-based operator of hospitals and healthcare facilities, Vanguard Health Systems ran community hospitals and outpatient centers across much of the United States, including the Detroit Medical Center. It was founded in 1997 by healthcare executive Charles N. Martin Jr., who bought nonprofit and struggling hospitals and turned them into investor-owned facilities. The name "Vanguard" was chosen to signal being at the forefront of the industry, and the company was later folded into Tenet Healthcare in 2013.
