A Connecticut-based insurance and surety-bond company, ACMAT traces back to 1950, when founder Henry W. Nozko Sr. launched a small firm called Acoustical Materials Corporation to install acoustical ceilings in commercial buildings. After decades as a building contractor, expanding into general contracting and asbestos removal, it formed ACSTAR Insurance Company in 1985 to issue bonds guaranteeing construction work and environmental remediation. A neat quirk: the name is just shorthand for "Acoustical Materials" — a company that now backs towering building projects got its start hanging ceiling tiles.
