iShares Trust
A family of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that trade on stock exchanges like individual stocks, letting everyday investors buy a slice of a whole market index in one purchase. The brand began in 1996 as WEBS (World Equity Benchmark Shares) under Barclays Global Investors, which rebranded the lineup as iShares in 2000 — the "i" echoing the internet-era naming fad of the day. BlackRock acquired the business in 2009, and today iShares is one of the world's largest ETF providers.
