A maker of the polishing liquids and pads used to smooth the microscopic layers of computer chips as they're built, CMC Materials (born in 2000 as Cabot Microelectronics, a spinoff of chemicals giant Cabot Corporation) supplied slurries to semiconductor fabs and performance materials to pipeline operators. One fun fact: these "slurries" aren't like the muddy kind — they're ultra-fine abrasive liquids that keep each chip layer perfectly flat, and the company was so closely tied to its parent that it kept "Cabot" in its name until rebranding to CMC in 2020.
