A Houston-based offshore contractor that sent divers and remotely operated vehicles into the sea to build, repair, and decommission underwater oil and gas infrastructure in the Gulf of Mexico and beyond. The name traces to a California oilfield diving company founded in the 1960s by Lad Handelman, who reclaimed the "Cal Dive" name in 1980 when he and colleagues left Oceaneering to start the firm. In 1984 it designed the Gulf's first diving support vessel with a moonpool—an opening in the hull that lets diving bells lower through the ship's center, sheltered from rough seas.
