A holding company that owns Google and its many ventures, Alphabet oversees the world's most-used search engine, the Android phone system, YouTube, and the Chrome browser, alongside moonshot projects like the Waymo self-driving car and Verily life sciences. It traces back to 1998, when Stanford Ph.D. students Larry Page and Sergey Brin launched a search engine out of a Menlo Park garage, originally calling it "BackRub" before renaming it Google (a misspelling of "googol"). Alphabet was created in 2015 to separate Google's core internet business from its riskier experiments. The name is a playful nod to "alpha-bet" — alpha being finance-speak for beating the market.
